How to Eat the Seasons – your guide to a greener diet in September

So, what’s in season in September?

September 23rd will mark the end to another glorious Summer, but alas this isn’t cause for anything but excitement as Autumn brings with it so much joy! Now that you’ve enjoyed some Summer fun in the sun, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about how to cut down on your carbon footprint and there’s no better way to start then by finding our how to eat the seasons and sourcing them locally. At our cosy little restaurant in Bristol we make it our mission to source our food as local as possible and even do our bit by growing some of our own veg in the garden for our customers to enjoy! We’ve put together a list of our favourite veg that’s in season during September along with some helpful recipe tips!

Your family Sunday roast won’t be neglected


The UK is home to some of the best vegetable farming, and you’ll be happy to know that many family favourites are grown right here in home soil. So if you think that eating the seasons means sacrificing some of those delicious roast side dishes – think again. Potatoes, beetroot, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower are all still on the menu!

Our favourite side dish is the classic cauliflower cheese, however; if you’re looking for something a bit different try spicing it up a bit with some cumin, turmeric, chilli and ginger!


Butternut Squash


As the cooler months roll in, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of the ever so delicious butternut squash. This adaptable veg is packed full of flavour – a helpful tip when buying is to go by weight, they should feel heavy for their size and the bigger the better for these little treasures as the larger squash tend to pack in more flavour. As an appetising autumnal treat, try it mashed with some cream and a touch of cinnamon or nutmeg. Yum!

Back to basics


Sweetcorn. Is there anything better? When prepared and eaten correctly it’s one of the most satisfying flavours and textures around. You can add sweetcorn to just about anything, but for us it’s the classic corn on the cob job that really gets our taste buds going. Buy sweetcorn with a fresh and intact husk for better flavour and try cooking it in the oven, husk and all, before peeling lathering on the butter and tucking in.


Courgette and it’s big brother Marrow


Another versatile, delicious and locally grown treat is none other than the Courgette. Popular among vegetarians, this vegetable can be used for so many delicious dishes and can even be added to cakes and breads! A slightly less common vegetable you might not think to pick up off the green grocer shelves is courgettes older brother, the Marrow. Both these veg are a must over the autumn months and are both great in stews, fried, baked and stuffed with your choice of delicious filling.
